Our Approach

SCISA STEAM CERTIFICATION – We are honored to have received the South Carolina Independent School Association’s STEAM Certification.  We were awarded this distinction based on our approach which incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics throughout a student’s daily experience. According to SCISA Director, Dr. Spencer Jordan, “Many people talk about 21st century education, but Crown Leadership Academy is already reaching for end of 21st century in preparing their students to make a difference in the world.”

SCHEDULE − (The following applies to students in grades 4-12.  Our elementary classes typically stay in one classroom for their academic learning.)   Students attend academic classes Monday through Thursday. If a student completes their schoolwork (with excellence) by Thursday at 2:00, they are not required to attend school on Friday.  Fridays are reserved for exploring special but related interests outside the classroom.  For example some of our recent students have participated in the following activities for school extra-curricular credit: Photography Internship, Volunteer Work, Recreation Department Athletics,  Local theater production, Archery class, Art class, Tennis lessons, International mission trips to India and China, and many more.  Teachers, students and parents together locate opportunities that students explore to understand the small and substantial ways their unique gifts can change the world.  Students earn class credit upon successful completion of goals. Hours are 9:00 to 3:15.  Each morning begins with Prayer, Worship, and our School Meeting where we discuss issues that are effecting our school, community and world. Holidays and important dates are located on our school calendar.  Generally, we take a one week break following each quarter. In addition,  Crown allows distance-learning arrangements to accommodate family travels and other out-of-town experiences.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING − Our primary goal is that each individual student is learning at his or her very highest level of potential success, so this list is always growing and evolving.  The method of Project Based Learning promotes critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. We use SC State Educational Standards as the outline of what is covered in academic classes throughout every grade level.  Class discussions and driving questions shape the direction that students run in order to learn academic material, while also growing in real-world skills.  Curriculum rarely drives the learning at Crown, however, we do use the following textbooks in math and in elementary ELA: MathTeaching Textbooks , McRuffy Math Language Arts –  McRuffy

CREATIVITY − Crown teachers are passionate about presenting information to students in a creative and individualized manner.  This student-centered approach nurtures critical thinking:  not merely remembering but understanding, not simply summarizing but articulating causal relationships, problem-solving, and application of learning to life. We encourage students to express creativity in completing coursework.  Students who think for themselves and have curious minds will exercise these gifts and fulfill their highest goals. As General George Patton said, “Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.”

HOMEWORK POLICY − We desire our students to be well-rounded individuals who experience a balanced life that includes time with family and participation in sporting, artistic and community events. Therefore, rather than daily skills practice, homework at Crown is limited to reading and preparation for tests, presentations and projects.  However, we encourage our students to use their resource of time, while at school, wisely so that they should rarely have homework.

WE CHANGE THE WORLD. CHRISTIANITY  − Crown is a nondenominational Christian school that is open to all teachers and students who desire to grow spiritually, respect and adherence to God’s word, display an openness to the Holy Spirit, and have an ever-increasing vision for the use of their talents to effect change in the world.  As part of our desire to change the world, we admit students with varied faith backgrounds. “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” John 17:20-21 At Crown, we commit to uniting in love with all Christians to change the world. In everything we do, students learn they are uniquely created by God to bring great value to the world,  now and throughout their lives.
